In an interview with Wirtschaftswoche, Ryanair DAC Managing Director Eddie Wilson criticized the high airport fees in Germany, among other things. He also accuses that there would be a structural problem and that Lufthansa would collect exorbitant prices.
The Lowocoster would be so expensive to operate in the Federal Republic that you could fly more profitably from other countries. “One problem is your airport fees. Some airports charge more than 40 euros per passenger and then again up to a good ten euros for the security check. Not only is that more than twice as much as most airports in Italy. It's also a third higher than our average ticket price combined. In addition, your air traffic control costs almost twice as much as in 2021. And we also have to pay for our planes, kerosene and employees," Wilson told Wirtschaftswoche.
He also criticizes Frankfurt Airport. The most recent appointment with Fraport really resembled a comedy. According to Wilson, the operator would rather leave a new terminal building empty than grow with Ryanair. The Ryanair DAC Managing Director also told Wirtschaftswoche: “Lufthansa, on the other hand, often asks seven times or more on the Kurroute. But my impression is: instead of doing something about it, Germany sits there fat, jaded and self-satisfied - and hopes that the airlines will come back on their own. But that won't happen. This gives Germany a fundamental structural problem, because due to a lack of connections, air traffic as a growth driver is largely absent".
