Dortmund Airport counted a total of 376.714 passengers in the recent summer vacation of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. This is only about two percent below the comparative value that was achieved in 2019.
In total, passengers from Dortmund could choose from 59 destinations in 27 countries. The holiday island of Mallorca was particularly popular with almost 33.000 travelers, followed by Katowice and Bucharest. Other popular holiday destinations were Catania, Crete and Split.
“We are currently almost at pre-crisis level,” says Guido Miletic, Head of Airport Services and Marketing. “Air traffic at our location recovered significantly faster during the holidays than we could have expected at the beginning of the holidays. We had expected at least 250.000 passengers for the main travel season. There have been over 100.000 more. "
The reasons for the strong growth are, in addition to the lower number of infections in large parts of Europe, an increasing vaccination rate and the associated increased safety when traveling, as well as location-related advantages. Shortly before the summer holidays, Eurowings significantly expanded its offering from Dortmund Airport to include attractive hot water destinations. Since then, travelers have had the chance to fly to Kavala, Alicante or Rhodes. The offers on the popular routes to Catania, Malaga and Heraklion have been significantly expanded. "We are very happy that we have been able to establish and publicize the Eurowings routes so well in a very short time," said Miletic.
Wizz Air also increased its offer just in time for the main travel season and is now flying to destinations such as Burgas and Sarajevo. The connection to Mallorca was introduced in April. SunExpress reported back after a pandemic-related break of over a year and resumed the connection to Izmir.
Miletic is very satisfied with the passenger development in the summer months: “We can be proud. Dortmund Airport is the airport in Germany that is closest to the pre-crisis level. The average number of passengers in the industry is around 40 percent compared to 2019. We know that the corona pandemic can occasionally lead to short-term adjustments and setbacks, but overall we are robust and broadly positioned. The numbers for the summer holidays prove that. "
