Wizz Air UK will close its Doncaster Sheffield base effective 10 June 2022, discontinuing a total of 13 routes. These are mainly tourist destinations, so it can be assumed that many holidaymakers will be affected. The carrier blames the airport.

Wizz Air UK has accused Doncaster-Sheffield Airport of failing to honor an agreement. Therefore, the decision was made to drastically reduce the presence. The airport counters that they didn't know anything about it and only found out that there were discrepancies after the public announcement of the cancellations.

The flight connections to Lanzarote, Malaga, Alicante, Fuerteventura, Larnaca, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, Faro, Kosice, Gran Canaria, Riga and Lublin are affected. The destinations Wroclaw, Warsaw, Vilnius, Poznan, Bucharest, Katowice, Kraków, Gdansk and Cluj are served from other bases and are – at least for the time being – not affected.

According to the airline, the situation is as follows: "Unfortunately, this decision follows Doncaster Sheffield Airport's statement that it is unable to guarantee the terms of its commercial agreement with Wizz Air. Our priority is to minimize the overall disruption to our UK customers and to protect our crew's employment. Therefore, the pilots and cabin crew at Doncaster Sheffield Airport were today informed of this news and offered to fly from another base in the UK. Considering the current difficult operational environment in the travel industry, particularly air traffic control and airport staffing shortages, this decision also stabilizes our operations at other UK bases to minimize disruption and delays as much as possible."

The situation at Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a little different. The airport explains its take on the matter as follows: “It is unfortunate that Wizz Air has decided to cancel a large number of flights at Doncaster Sheffield Airport from 10 June 2022. Unfortunately, the DSA only found out about this decision this afternoon through a message to the media. We are trying to get more information from the airline about their decision and how it will affect passengers."
